CNG to automate meter reading, reduce greenhouse gases

East Hartford, CT, May 23, 2007 - Connecticut Natural Gas Corporation (CNG) has announced plans to invest $10-million to automate its meter reading system in the Greater Hartford area and help reduce regional greenhouse gases in the process. The investment will allow CNG to read residential and small commercial customer meters remotely without the need to gain access to a customer's residence or place of business. Once automated, the number of vehicles needed to complete monthly meter-reading routes will decrease from 24 to four, which also will contribute to the Northeast regional efforts to lower automotive exhaust emissions, including hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide and carbon dioxide, all of which contribute to the greenhouse effect.

"The technology is an extremely efficient way to read our customers' meters and will virtually eliminate estimated bills," said Bob Allessio, President and Chief Executive Officer. "The project not only adds precision and convenience to the meter reading process, but also reinforces our company's commitment to environmental stewardship."

In order to implement the automated process, CNG representatives will soon begin installing electronic radio transmitters on existing meters throughout CNG's service area. Once operational, the transmitters will send a signal on a regular basis to record the readings. CNG expects to begin reading meters electronically by July 2008.

CNG representatives will continue to manually read meters until the AMR system comes on line. Customers will receive notification when the new meter reading system becomes operational.
