Sizes and Types

Pool heaters are sized based on the surface area of the pool they will be heating. For example, if your pool is 15 feet by 20 feet, you’ll need a pool heater that can handle 300 square feet of surface area. If you live in a windy area you may need a slightly larger pool heater. Your local pool dealer will be able to help you select the right size heater for your pool.

In addition to natural gas, you may find some types of pool heaters that are fueled by heating oil or propane. Don’t assume that there’s no difference between fuel types. Natural gas will cost you less – a lot less – than the other fuels to heat your pool each summer. For example, for a heated in-ground pool you could save up to $500 per year by using natural gas instead of oil, and up to $1,000 per year by using natural gas instead of propane.

• Lower the pool or spa heater’s temperature setting. Install a time clock to pre-set and minimize heating hours.
• Keep your spa or pool covered when not in use. Well-fitted pool and spa covers help prevent heat loss for energy savings of up to 50%-70%. Besides helping to minimize nighttime heat loss, pool covers also help prevent chemical loss and water evaporation.
• Consider purchasing a solar pool cover; it uses the sun to heat the water’s surface.
• Reduce pool filtering and automatic pool sweep time to a minimum, and schedule it for “off-peak”
