CNG, SCG Launch New Online Tool to Increase Awareness of Pipeline Improvement Projects

New “Annual Pipeline Modernization Plan” webpages offer customers an interactive tool with details of active projects in each municipality the companies serve

ORANGE, Conn. — July 25, 2025 — As part of their continuing efforts to increase customer awareness around company projects, today, Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG) and Southern Connecticut Gas (SCG), subsidiaries of Avangrid, Inc., announced the launch of a new online tool called the Annual Pipeline Modernization Plan. Found on the companies’ websites, the Annual Pipeline Modernization Plan webpages show customers details related to all active Pipeline Modernization projects that the companies are undertaking through the Distribution Integrity Management Program (DIMP), a program under federal and state regulations that requires natural gas companies to modernize their pipeline infrastructure to improve safety and resiliency. Using the new tool, customers will be able to see when CNG and SCG will be replacing gas pipelines in their neighborhoods by street listing as well as access additional details about the project process.

“While there is no doubt customers benefit from investments in the safety and resiliency of our pipeline infrastructure, we understand these projects have construction impacts in neighborhoods and communities that can be frustrating,” said Frank Reynolds, President & CEO of CNG and SCG. “We are eager to increase awareness of the purpose, the timelines, and all other details about each of these pipeline improvement projects, and the Annual Pipeline Modernization Plan webpages are our latest commitment to those efforts.”

The Annual Pipeline Modernization Plan webpages were an initiative of the companies’ Project Outreach team, which identified a need for a one-stop shop for customers to obtain all relevant information for projects under DIMP. The interactive online tool allows customers to see each street on which the companies are working, the duration the companies expect to be working on each project, the contractor implementing each project, and specific impacted streets and addresses for each project. The Project Outreach team will update the website as new projects begin. The Annual Pipeline Modernization Plan webpages are part of a comprehensive customer outreach campaign that also includes postcards, FAQs, field cards and a dedicated outreach phone number for each company.

For inclusion on the Annual Pipeline Modernization Plan webpages, projects must be part of the Distribution Integrity Management Program. Intended to ensure the safety, reliability and resiliency of the natural gas distribution system for customers, DIMP became a rule under the U.S. Department of Transportation Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration in December 2009. It requires natural gas utility companies, which are often more than 100 or even 150 years old, to replace aging natural gas pipelines, which are often made of cast-iron or bare steel, with more technologically advanced corrugated plastic.

“Our Project Outreach team works hard to ensure our customers receive a variety of notices and other communications about each and every project that will potentially impact their neighborhood,” continued Reynolds. “We are always looking for new ways to engage our customers and meet them where they are with clear, straightforward answers to the questions they have. The Annual Pipeline Modernization Plan webpages are a cornerstone of those efforts, and we look forward to our CNG and SCG customers using them as an informational resource.”
