UI, SCG, CNG Encourage Customers to Save Energy During National Energy Awareness Month
Companies share practical tips and energy efficiency resources to help customers reduce electricity and natural gas usage year-round
ORANGE, Conn. — October 15, 2026 — In recognition of National Energy Awareness Month this October, United Illuminating (UI), Southern Connecticut Gas (SCG), and Connecticut Natural Gas (CNG), subsidiaries of Avangrid, are encouraging customers to take simple steps to conserve energy, improve efficiency, and lower monthly utility bills.
“National Energy Awareness Month is a great reminder that even small changes and habits can have a meaningful impact,” said Frank Reynolds, President and CEO of UI, SCG, and CNG. “Whether it's replacing older lighting with LEDs, adjusting the thermostat, sealing air leaks, or taking advantage of energy efficiency programs, customers have many opportunities to reduce energy use and save money. Our goal is to help customers access the resources and tools that make those savings possible.”
National Energy Awareness Month highlights the importance of understanding how energy is used and the actions individuals can take to reduce consumption. Energy efficiency remains one of the most effective ways for customers to manage energy costs while maintaining comfort and reliability. Small changes, combined with energy-efficient upgrades, can deliver meaningful savings over time. In 2026 so far, the companies have participated in over 150 community outreach events, connecting in-person with thousands of customers to share information on energy efficiency programs.
“Energy efficiency is one of the most effective tools available to help customers control their energy use and lower their bills,” said Marissa Westbrook, Senior Manager of Conservation and Load Management for UI, SCG, and CNG. “This month is an opportunity for customers to learn more about the resources available to them and to take simple actions that can lead to lasting savings. Whether through everyday conservation habits or participation in energy efficiency programs, every step can make a difference.”
UI, SCG, and CNG encourage customers to consider the following energy-saving tips:
Tips to Save Electricity
- Replace older lighting with energy-efficient LED lighting.
- Turn off lights when leaving a room and use timers or smart controls when possible.
- Unplug chargers and electronics when not in use.
- Keep refrigerators operating efficiently by allowing space for air circulation and maintaining recommended temperature settings.
- Consider a programmable or smart thermostat to better manage heating and cooling schedules.
Natural Gas and Home Heating Tips
- Lower thermostat settings when away from home or asleep while maintaining safe indoor temperatures.
- Seal drafts around doors and windows and add weatherstripping where needed.
- Open curtains on sunny winter days and close them at night to reduce heat loss.
- Lower water heater temperatures to approximately 120°F where appropriate.
- Schedule regular maintenance for heating equipment to ensure efficient operation.
Customers looking to take the next step can participate in programs available through Energize Connecticut®, including Home Energy Solutions assessments, weatherization improvements, and other energy-saving upgrades that help reduce long-term energy consumption and costs.
